GPT-4 is out in limited beta and the question for lots of people right now is how can I access GPT-4? And is there anywhere I can access it for free?
TypeEngine are an OpenAI development partner and have access to the GPT-4 beta.
GPT-4 is in limited beta as OpenAI scales it up. There is a huge demand on their models, especially from ChatGPT and they've struggled to handle those demands. As such they've elected to slowly roll out access to groups of users and developers to ensure their infrastructure can handle the demand. There is also a large amount of effort being spent currently on ensuring the model is evaluated thoroughly and safeguards are adequate given its power.
As of the time of writing on 17/03/2023, the only place that we know of that has implemented GPT-4 for public use in the Chat format is OpenAI. Their ChatGPT plus product offers access to GPT-4 but doesn't guarantee it as it is demand dependent and there are limitations. Other companies are implementing it (including us!) but it may be a few more days before it is available.
Here is what OpenAI says about GPT-4 access:
"ChatGPT Plus subscribers will get GPT-4 access on chat.openai.com with a usage cap. We will adjust the exact usage cap depending on demand and system performance in practice, but we expect to be severely capacity constrained (though we will scale up and optimize over upcoming months).
Depending on the traffic patterns we see, we may introduce a new subscription level for higher-volume GPT-4 usage; we also hope at some point to offer some amount of free GPT-4 queries so those without a subscription can try it too."
Currently no, you'll need to have access to ChatGPT plus. However, TypeEngine will be releasing GPT-4 to our users in the coming days. This means you will be able to use it for free. You can sign up for a free account now and we'll notify you when it is ready.
